A). Raw Material
(a) What kind of wood are you using?
We use Poplar, Pine, Eucalyptus and Babool wood. Please note that UCI is the only company in India with special access to Pine based Charcoal and wood, exclusively from the Indian Government. We get close to 20000 TPA of pine charcoal from Northern parts of India
(b) Do you carbonize in-house or buy carbonized material?
We carbonize in-house and also buy carbonized material from external sources
(c) How do you receive this raw material?
Raw material received in 6mm to 300mm sizes are sized, crushed and screened to 6mm x 25mm
(d) Do you have “competitors” in this wood sourcing for the same product?
Yes, we do. But we are the largest. We are the biggest bowl of wood in our region.
(e) Is this wood raw material a by-product or produced specifically for you ?
Wood is a by-product. The good wood goes to ply wood and wood without timber is sent to us
(f) How far is this raw material supply from your production plant (same region)?
20 kms – 250 kms
(g) What is the price of this raw material (wood and carbonized)?
Charcoal=US$ 0.35/ kg
B). Production and industrial tools
(a) Are you producing steam activated products?
(b) Are you producing chemical activated products? If yes, phosphoric or Zinc chloride or both?
Presently our pilot plants in operation making use of Phosphoric and Zinc Chloride for activation will be commercialized in 2016.
(c) Are you using rotary or vertical kilns?
(d) How many kilns?
12 Rotary Kilns
(e) Production capacity per kiln?
800 kgs per day
(f) Are you producing only one product of a given activation level after activation or processing thereafter for others?
(g) Are you able to water or acid wash the product for removing impurities?
90% of our production is acid washed and the balance is water washed.
(h) What kind of crushers are you using and the resulting particle sizes?
We use Impact Pulverizes as most of our carbon is 200 mesh powder
(i) What is the percentage production of Granular and powder types?
(j) What is a classical lead time for production of a standard grade between receipt of order and shipment from the factory?
10-20 days for regular orders.
(a) Range of sizes/Density of granular product
Possible sizes for powders (mesh or mean diameter) 100 % through 100 mesh, 90% through 200 mesh, 65% through 325 mesh; Density of GAC- 200-275kg / m3
(b) What are the presence of metallic impurities in PAC?
Below detectable limits of Arsenic, Zinc and other impurities
(c) What is the ash content of Acid washed product?
Acid washed product wood based carbon has Ash content as low 1% and iron levels below 50 ppm.
(d) Other properties of GAC
Hardness – 65:70, pH : Alkaline
(e) Possibility to reduce pH under 7 for steam activated carbon:
D). Laboratory controls
(a) How do you measure size of powders?
(b) How do you carry out activation level measurement?
Titration and spectrophotometer
(c) Do you have other lab equipments?
pH meter, spectrophotometer, distillation plant, magnetic shaker
(d) Can you measure impurities by atomic absorption)?
– Only via physical / chemical tests
(a) Do you have a Quality registration and by whom?
– ISO 9001-2008: URS, Halal Certification
(b) For a shipment to customer, what is the normal frequency of analysis (how many analyzed samples per container, for example?)
A batch is of 1020 kgs, every 5th bag of each batch is tested. 1020 kgs has 33 bags.
(a) What are your standard packaging?
Double Polyethylene lines ; Laminated HDPE bags 25,30, 40 & 50 kg ; Fiber drums
(c) Do you have the capability to adjust packing (size, weight) to the requirements of the customers?
(d) Standard packaging:
Packing – bulk bags, plastic LDPE 10 kg pouches in double HDPE bags – 10kg x 3 = 30 kg HDPE bags, in drums on request, pelletisation on request
(a) What is the nearest port of loading?
1) Mundra, Gujarat
2) Nava Sheva, Maharashtra
(b) Is there any trans-shipment between this port and northern Europe main ports ? and where ?
(c) Do you have any specific agreement with a shipping line or with a forwarding company?
Yes. With a Standard Forwarding company for the last 15 years
(d) How many days between container loading and vessel departure?
