How to enrich Activated Carbon Changes ?

Apr 8, 2014ucicarbonsActivated Carbon manufacturing0 Comment

Activated Carbon manufactured from Wood / Carbonaceous raw material has alkaline earth metals, chlorides and phosphates. It also has insoluble impurities like silica etc. While acid soluble and water soluble impurities can be removed by acid washing, insoluble impurities remain with the carbon and can only be removed by gravity separation.

Powdered activated carbon – once can remove the silica during pulverizing. Lighter finer activated carbon particles move up while heavier silica particles stay at the bottom. Once insoluble particles are removed – acid washing the PAC / carbon particles with dilute H2SO4 helps remove all acid soluble impurities. Calcium, Magnesium and Iron in the form of chlorides, sulfates and phosphates are removed from activated carbon. While the heavier carbon particles settle down and water is decanted. A ratio of 1: 2.5 for acid: carbon is kept when one washes the carbon with acid.

Impurity content to the magnitude of 10-12 percent can be removed if the washing is done as per standard operating processes. After acid washing subsequent water washes are given to bring the pH to neutral.

Post the washing carbon is dewatered, dried and packed for delivery.
